Since its inception, Copper Wild Seafoods has set out to satiate the wild salmon market demands of restauraunts, fish markets, eco-conscious seafood consumers, and any other wild-salmon-seeking palates. People often subscribe to the notion that commercial fishing destroys oceans and depletes natural resources at unsustainable levels. However, the Copper River inshore drift gill net fishery debunks that myth. Being one of the last truly wild salmon runs in the world, Copper River fisherman adhere to harvest techniques and fishing regulations as set out by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game. King, red and silver salmon available as well as smoked king, red and silver.

Species caught with the F/V Gulkana, a 31’ gillnet bowpicker typically fishing on the Copper River Delta. Species available are: Sockeye from mid May to end of July. King from mid May to mid June. Coho beginning early in August until the end of September. All product is gillnet caught in the Copper River and Bering River districts. The vessel is set up for onboard processing and efficient handling of product flow over the deck. An immersion bleeding method is used onboard and all catch is processed pre-rigor just after it is caught. The dressed product is then chilled and stored in a separate dressed product hold on ice and round fish are stored in another RSW hold. PAS-H&G product is handled by human hands only (5) times in the entire operation, the fifth time being the customer when opening their order.
Product is available fresh in season in the months previously outlined above. A small inventory of frozen vacuum packed PAS-sockeye and coho fillets is maintained, and next year, the product line should become more diverse.
Additional comments from the captain: I have been aggressively marketing what I am calling a relatively new product form, that being, a PAS-H&G, Processed at Sea Headed & Gutted product form. What differs this product form from other H&G is the fact that it is Processed at Sea just after capture. This would be analogous to a FAS (Frozen at Sea) product form and otherwise shore-side frozen product form. The quality gains are tremendous and the distinction for this FAS product form has proven itself in the marketplace. It is my hope to achieve the same distinction in the market place with a net caught fish from a river mouth fishery. A smaller mesh size will be used to produce a near net mark free fish. In year one, the acceptance of this PAS-H&G product form has been very well received by our customer’s nation-wide. As previously stated, pre-rigor processing is our goal, in addition to bringing fish aboard alive through shorter sets so they can be properly bled. Immersion bleeding helps minimize bruising and yields a better-expelled blood percentage than dry bleeding and a cleaner workspace. This bleeding tank doubles up as a hopper once the water is drained and can then supply two deck hands product within one step of each processing station on board. We can be back in town within two hours of a fishing period closure and have fresh PAS-H&G product enroute via Alaska Airlines to lower 48 destinations that same day. Mind you that our ability to deliver this kind of product on this timeline is in direct proportion to allowable fishing periods that ADF&G provides for while in season.

Wild Salmon Direct sells fish caught by two Kodiak Salmon Seine fishermen. We catch and sell sockeye and coho salmon.
All our salmon is held alive in floating net pens until processing begins.
Processing begins when our tender, the F/V Shearwater, arrives on the grounds. The fish are lifted in specially constructed brailers from the pens and placed into a bath of seawater that has been saturated with carbon dioxide to stun the fish. We lift no more than 300 pounds of fish to avoid crushing and bruising.
After stunning, the fish are moved to a sorting/bleeding table. All of the fish are bled alive and placed in refrigerated seawater to bleed out and chill. The fish are then transported to a HAACP certified shore based processing facility in Kodiak for shipping and/or freezing.
Currently we have frozen sockeye and coho in the following forms: IQF H&G, IQF Fillets (PBO-Skin On), and IQF Fillets (PBO-Skinless). The H&G are glazed, sleeved and boxed in 50 lb. boxes. The Fillets are all cryovac’ed and can be shipped in various box sizes.
At this time we are selling wholesale only; however, by the first of next year we will be selling retail.
