723ObituariesRalph W Ericksen RALPH WILLIAM ERICKSEN Age 65 died May 10, 2008 in Seattle after a two year illness due to a series of strokes. He was born in Seattle February 8, 1943. Ralph is survived by his loving companion of 26 years, Karen Nash and beloved daughter Lori, her husband Bayani Alvarez and grandchild Nicole of Seattle. He was preceded in death by his father, Ralph C. Ericksen on Stuart Island in 1998 and younger brother, Eric C. Ericksen in 2005. Ralph is also survived by his mother Florence Ericksen, brother David W. and sister Linda (Jim) Bergquist all of Stuart Island; sisters Barbara Schloredt, Seattle; Vivian E. (Bob) Schroth, Juneau, AK/Lynnwood, WA and Katherine Ericksen. He is also survived by Karen Nash's parents, Gil and Arlene and Karen's sisters and brothers. Ralph began commercial fishing with his Dad when he was 14 on the F/V VIVIAN where they purse seined around Puget Sound, then in Alaska for halibut. He was raised mainly on Stuart Island (one of the outer islands of the San Juans), he attended the one-room school house with his sisters and brothers. When the family moved back to Seattle he attended James Monroe, Jr. High, then Ballard High where he met his future wife, Linda Dingello. He quit school early to commercial fish with his Dad aboard the F/V VIVIAN throughout Alaska, including the Bering Sea. In 1962 he married Linda and they had his only child, Lori. They later divorced. Ralph joined the Army in 1967 and proudly served in Vietnam in 1968-69 where he participated in live action in many hot spots in Nam. Upon his discharge, between fishing seasons he worked as a produce manager and delivery man for Conrad Schloredt, owner of the 3rd Avenue Market in Ballard. In 1972 he partnered with his brother David on the F/V MARY B; soon David bought the F/V MEMORIES and Ralph became sole owner of the Mary B. He continued trolling for tuna off the Pacific Coast, Hawaii and as far as Midway with Karen as his sole crew member acting as deckhand and all other duties handling the albacore on the "Good Ship MARY B" as Ralph was fond of calling his boat. He and Karen lived in Seattle throughout their years together, but would stop by Stuart on their way to and from the grounds. Ralph will be remembered by his generosity, humor and kind disposition by all who knew him. He is also survived by 11 nieces and nephews, numerous great nieces and nephews and one great grand niece. A celebration of Ralph's life was held in Seattle May 22 and although it wasn't advertised publicly, word-of-mouth caused a good number of people to attend. A memorial service at the cemetery on Stuart Island will be held Saturday, July 5 at 1pm. At Ralph request in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Emergency Medical Technicians Association (Rescue Team) - POB 1243 - Friday Harbor, WA 98250 as they were so quick to respond to his father's sudden heart attack in 1998. The family may be contacted through Florence Ericksen, Stuart Island, c/o Friday Harbor, WA 98250. We miss you already dear companion, son, brother and friend. -Vivian Ericksen Schroth425-745-2800n/a
